REDWAY |
The Redway surname is a habitual name, taken on from any various place names, such as Radway in Devon, Radway in Warwickshire, Rodway in Somerset, or Roadway in Devon. The place names are all from Old English words “re-ad”, meaning “red” and “waye”, meaning road.
First found in Somerset, England where they had held a family seat as Lords of the Manor. The Saxon influence of English history diminished after the battle of Hastings in 1066. The language of the courts was French for the next three centuries and the Norman ambience prevailed. However, Saxon names survived and the family name was first referenced in the year 1205 when Henry de Radeweie held estates in that shire. Grace (1747- 1823) |
On the same plantation was another enslaved African woman named Caroline born c. 1779. DNA has proved that I am related to REDWAY descendants of Caroline via her daughter Venus, also African.
DNA has also indicated that the same Redway descendant and I share a Nigerian ancestor. This descendant also share the surnames CAMPBELL, COVER and JOHNSON which are also connected to my family. I continue in my never ending journey to find answers! |
ELEANOR (c. 1779-?) |
Eleanor, a Negro woman born in the West Indies appears to be my Great, Great, Great Grandmother. She is documented at age 38 on a 1817 slave register for brothers Henry and William REDWAR in St. Ann, Jamaica. Eleanor was one of 84 female slaves of 192 total slaves documented on the register.
|
Eleanor's slave owners, Henry and William Redwar were the sons of Henry Redwar Esq. and Elizabeth Gibbons Lewis. Henry Sr. was born in Barbados around 1752. He migrated to Jamaica and died there in 1798. As per Alan Payne's article "Box Slavery Families", Redwar later owned two large plantations at Pedro Park Penn, on the border of the provinces of St Ann and St Catherine, and the Dunbarton estate, St Ann.Perhaps Eleanor was brought from Barbados to Jamaica by the Redwar family?
|
The slave registers indicate that Eleanor had at least 5 children:
Emily (Sambo) born c. 1800 - William (Sambo) born c. 1806 - Colling Wood (Sambo) born c. 1809 - 1901 Sebina (Negro) born c. 1814 - James (Sambo) born c. 1816 - |
COLINWOOD rEDWAY (1790-1901) |
Collingwood / Collin Wood Redway my Great Great Grandfather was described as Sambo. This means that since his mother Eleanor was Negro, his father was Mulatto. His father is unknown at this time.
On 26 November 1840 Collingwood married Maria Jones at Dry Harbour Chapel, in St. Ann, Jamaica. At the time of marriage Collingwood was a carpenter. |
A testimonial of Collin's was published in The New British and Foreign Temperance Magazine: And Monthly Chronicle 1841. (see below) The Redway surname was transcribed as "Redmar" perhaps for Redwar? There is an Adolphus on the Redwar slave registers, likely he is the same person quoted below. The relationship between him and Collin is unknown at this time.
|

- Thomas Richard
- Eleanor
- Robert
