Welcome to 1st Generation Genealogy
Every family has a story. Some stories have been carefully passed down through generations, while others are hidden within old records, forgotten photographs, and long-lost memories waiting to be rediscovered.
1st Generation Genealogy was created to preserve, share, and celebrate family histories. What began as a personal journey to uncover my own Jamaican roots has grown into a collection of family stories, historical research, and ancestral discoveries spanning Jamaica, Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, and beyond.
My research journey started in the parish of Saint Ann, Jamaica, where my grandparents were born. Beginning with my paternal grandparents, Edward Nathaniel Stewart and Ardel Fedelia Johnson, and my maternal grandparents, Margaret Evans and Ernest Edward Redway, I set out to learn more about the people whose lives shaped my family's story. Over the years, that search has expanded to include more than 100s of ancestors and living relatives, along with many connected families whose histories intertwine across generations and continents.
Among these discoveries are family lines that reach back to Scotland in the seventeenth century, Panama in the early twentieth century, and an African woman named “Grace”, born around 1747 and enslaved on an estate in Dumbarton, Saint Ann, Jamaica. Each record, document, and family connection adds another piece to a much larger story, revealing journeys of resilience, migration, community, and family.
